The arrest and detention of Kusadasi Mayor Ömer Günel on corruption allegations has added our seaside resort to the growing list of opposition CHP strongholds getting special judicial attention. Following the high profile detention of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, it seems winning an election on an opposition ticket in Turkey comes with an automatic administrative audit and a one-way ticket to pretrial detention.

Meanwhile, our European Union neighbors continue their masterclass in diplomatic composure. Brussels remains steadfast in issuing its usual deeply concerned statements, carefully balanced to avoid disturbing any strategic migrant deals or trade arrangements. True to form, European principles remain exquisitely flexible when geopolitics are on the line.
